Apathy (also called impassivity or perfunctoriness) is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest or concern to emotional, social, or physical life. They may also exhibit an insensibility or sluggishness.

Often, apathy has been felt after witnessing horrific acts, such as the killing or maiming of people during a war. It is also known to be associated with many conditions, some of which are: depression, Alzheimer's disease, Chagas' disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, dementia, Korsakoff's Syndrome, excessive vitamin D, general fatigue, Huntington's disease, Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), schizophrenia, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and others. Some medications and the heavy use of drugs such as heroin may bring apathy as a side effect.

In positive psychology, apathy is described as a response to an easy challenge for which the subject has matched skills. The opposite of apathy is flow.

What dramatic examples must i make in order to shake people out of apathy?
Q. "People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy." Most of you here know that quote from Batman begins. So now i'm asking, what kind of examples do we need?

A. Why do you feel this is your responsibility? I fear your attempts may end up working against you, that is as you push harder, you'll actually push them away. I wonder if your attempts to prove to them the perils of apathy are really a way for you to prove to yourself the very same thing. If you're a good enough example, they will take notice. Just be sure to stay genuine. If you struggle with apathy and cynicism, share this with them, as it will certainly make your cause seem all the more potent. Good luck.

How can I increase my apathy, as my country descends into its well-deserved oblivion?
Q. I find myself looking forward to the complete destruction of all tools, comforts and free enterprise. Thankfully we now have a President and Congress with the courage to get the job done. The middle class must be dismantled, if we are to have air to breathe and water to drink 20 years from now. God bless Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Speed the day! .

How much apathy is a bad thing?
Q. Ever since I was around 10 I've become very apathetic. I mean to the point of where I dont even feel anger, worry, regret, joy and any other powerful emotion. The most extreme things I really feel anymore are "looking forward to it kinda," "would rather not do it," slight annoyance, but even with those I'm fine one way or the other. Some people say it's bad to bottle in anger and other emotions, but for me it's like they dont even register or exist to ignore. My question is is anyone this apathetic and/or do you think it's a bad thing. I'm mainly just kinda curious.

A. It may be apathy, or you may just be a very laid-back person. I think apathy becomes a bad thing when it negatively affects your life (ie can't make friends, keep friends, set and accomplish goals, etc.) or someone else's life (ie not stepping in if someone was being hurt, not standing up for something that you believe is right, or treating people badly because they don't matter to you). instead of apathetic, you may simply be jaded about life. perhaps there was something that happened in childhood to teach you not to express any extremes in emotion (not angry but not happy, not concerned but not carefree). perhaps you were let down or felt like you were proven wrong and have since carried that feeling with you. my final wrap up would be… [cont.]
