Often, apathy has been felt after witnessing horrific acts, such as the killing or maiming of people during a war. It is also known to be associated with many conditions, some of which are: depression, Alzheimer's disease, Chagas' disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, dementia, Korsakoff's Syndrome, excessive vitamin D, Hypothyroidism, general fatigue, Huntington's disease, Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), schizophrenia, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Asperger's Syndrome, and others. Some medications and the heavy use of drugs such as heroin may bring apathy as a side effect.

In positive psychology, apathy is described as a response to an easy challenge for which the subject has matched skills. The opposite of apathy is flow.

Job change has led to apathy about work and I'm worried where this is going. Any tips to get back on track?
Q. I switched companies a year ago but I have been doing the same technical sales job for a while. Now, the job remained the same but the technology I sell is different and even though I have 15+ years experience in this field, it seems like an uphill battle to learn this stuff. I have the capability to learn it but I feel tired and like it is a lot of effort to do so. Work has been slow and managment has had a lot of changes. I guess over the summer, all of this has left me with a lot of apathy about my work which is 180 degrees (my wife use to fuss at me because I put work ahead of family) of where I have been. You would think that I'd be doing more around the house and with the family but I think I'm slipping the wrong way. I just… [cont.]

A. Several reasons and theories come to mind... 1. By and large, the US is a highly religious (mainly Christian) and somewhat puritanical society. And if the church doesn't say it's wrong, or even condones it, it *can't* be wrong. 2. Americans (and most people of westernized society) are completely separated from their food source. They go to the grocery store and see "chicken breast" neatly wrapped in plastic, with a pretty picture of a sprawling old-world farm on the front, de-boned, and ready to cook... there is no connection to where or how that meat ended up there, and there is no note to how it was produced. Consumers are largely in the dark, and seemingly, don't care about that fact. They want it easy, and they want it quick. 3.… [cont.]
