Arteries are red blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. This blood is normally oxygenated, exceptions made for the pulmonary and umbilical arteries. The circulatory system is extremely important for sustaining life. Its proper functioning is responsible for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all cells, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide and waste products, maintenance of optimum pH, and the mobility of the elements, proteins and cells of the immune system. In developed countries, the two leading causes of death, myocardial infarction and stroke, each may directly result from an arterial system that has been slowly and progressively compromised by years of deterioration. Q. If a person 30 years old (like me) lived without taking very good care of themselves, being between 50-75 pounds overweight for most of the adulthood, and then changes their lifestyle from bad eating and sedentary to active and healthy eating, would already damaged/clogged veins and arteries get better over time? Or, is the already present damage permanent? Asked by Avenger - Sun Aug 30 22:54:03 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Once you have clogged up an artery with plaques, it is hard to unclog it. I had to have a triple coronary artery bypass graft in 1999 and a triple angioplasty with stents this year to restore circulation to my heart. Because of poor circulation I have had 5 heart attacks and a stroke since 2000. My advice is to avoid emulating me. Live an active lifestyle with a low fat diet, get regular strenuous exercise, avoid unnecessary stress and take fish oil supplements.
